Weeds, Bees and Hummingbird Moths
It's mid-April and I haven't mowed my yards, except for a patch for my corgis to potty at without having to wade through weeds and vetch taller than their stomachs.
Yesterday I saw two hummingbird hawk moths in the front area, along with more bees searching each vetch flower. I love the activity in my yard. I hear people comment on social media that they don't see as many bees or butterflies as they did 40 years ago. As I walked through my weeds I remembered getting stung by bees on my feet nearly every summer, because my grandma had so much clover in her yard. I don't have clover in my yard (yet) but a goldenrod plant scavenged last year propagated seeds that are now spreading in one area.
This weekend, after a cycling event, I'll map out walking paths and start making edges to the pollinator areas so my neighbors won't complain to the city.
